Negative Space...

I've always loved negative space and logo and branding that uses it in a creative way. But I've never tried to explain it to someone else, as I tried the other day... I found it surprisingly hard to put into words...

This is the wikipedia entry...

"Negative space, in art, is the space around and between the subject(s) of an image. Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image."

I read that twice and was still unsure, and I know what it is and use it in my work!!

So I thought, right, I'm going to do a visual blog to explain negative space, and show you my favourite logos and examples, some of which you may already know and maybe not even noticed the hidden art...

So here's some of my favourite logos that use negative space to great effect.

This will almost explain it without me adding more words.

Most negative space logos work best in one colour, for a simple clean effect

Some artworks actually get you to work a bit harder to spot that hidden image and some are very obvious from the off, but that's the beauty of these clever effects.

One of my favourite artists M.C. Escher took using negative and positive space to a whole new level, so much so I don't know you'd even know where to start creating some his artworks. At the opposite end of the spectrum are examples that you've most definately seen before but so simple...

There it is, a quick, simple, easy guide to negative space...

Get sketching and designing people and see if you can come up with a simple one of your own!

I'm definately going to use it more in more in my branding work. It's a timeless art and design effect!!
